error: Setup script exited with error: Unable to find vcvarsall.bat

Setuptools (easy_install) can’t find vcvarsall.bat

This problem happened when I was installing the Milk: a machine learning toolkit in Python.

There is a file INSTALL.rst explain like this:

Building milk

The following should work::

python install

A C++ compiler is required. On Windows, you might need to specify the compiler.
For example::

python install –compiler=mingw32

If you have mingw installed.

The trick seems to be to install mingw ( and I used

Graphical User Interface Installer ( mingw-get-inst version)

make sure you select the base tools, g++ compiler and make stuff. I also chose c compiler & c++ complier to be installed. Note: you should make sure the path to MinGW directory should not contain any spaces. e.g., ‘C:\MinGW’. Then add `C:\MinGW\bin’ to your system Path.

Then create a file called ‘disutils.cfg’ in’ C:\Python26\Lib\distutils’ and put the follow in it:

Then exit from your command prompt,open it up again and  cd to the directory where sits, run: install build --compiler=mingw32
easy_install milk
